DISCOVERING UMBRIA
Bordered by Tuscany, Marche, Abruzzo and Lazio, Umbria is the only county
in central and southern Italy without a seacoast. The Umbrian countryside
features rolling hills, fertile plains, and the foothills of the Apennines.
Wooded hilltops are dotted with picturesque medieval villages, often built
on Etruscan, Roman and Umbria foundations. View is spectacular, and a
light breeze keeps the air fresh and mild, even in the heat of summer.
Along with a wide variety of rotational crops, Umbria is a major producer
of fine olive oil, wine, cheese, sausage, truffles and mushrooms.
A holiday in Umbria is ideal for travellers eager to discover out of the
way gems. Thanks to our long experience in language teaching for students
from all over the world, and to the remarkable success of our cultural
activities, The Language Center is now offering two exciting tour packages
of Umbria: Classical Umbria and Medieval Umbria.
In addition to the educational tours, you will have ample free time in
many of the locations we visit to shop, wander around on your own, or
have a relaxing drink in a café.
Our aim is to teach foreigners how to feel at ease with the Italian Lifestyle,
by learning about our culture and language......Live this unique experience

The regional capital of Umbria, Perugia was a cultural center
long before it became a Roman municipium around 90 BC. Founded as early
as the seventh century BC, Perugia was already an important center by
the fourth century BC when the Etruscans built their first walls there.
Remnants of these walls plus other Etruscan foundations and artifacts
can be seen throughout the modern city center. Our visit takes us through
Etruscan arches, restored by the Roman emperor Augustus, and again by
Pope Paul III, an Etruscan well and ancient aqueduct, plus the Archeological
Museum, a complex of structures that reveal the urban planning of the
ancient town from the third century BC to the 15th century AD. A segment
of Roman road with cart gutters is still visible, along which are the
remains of a semicircular building, and a terracotta conduit that probably
led to a fountain hundreds of years older than the present late medieval
fountain in the city center.
In nearby Ponte San Giovanni we will visit the Ipogeo dei
Volumni, late Etruscan tombs of the Velimna family.

Along the ancient Flaminian Way on the rolling plains at the foot of the
Martani mountains, we visit the spectacular remains of the Roman town
of Carsulae. Virtually untouched by later development, Carsulae is a fine
example of Roman urban planning and architecture. The Flaminian Way, a
road that at one point led to Berlin, runs through the town center and
features several splendid ancient monuments such as the theatre, amphitheater,
tombs, twin temples, the Arch of San Damiano, the Fonnaia bridge, and
the catacombs and abbey of San Faustino.
Following the Flaminian Way a little further is Ocriculum, an archeological
site with the remains of a large theatre, an arcade, part of a second-century
AD bathhouse, and an amphitheatre, partly constructed, partly carved out
of rock.

century amphitheater, built outside the city walls, the Arco di Druso,
Arco di Monterone - a third century BC arch from which the Flaminian Way

Roman remains that make Spoleto more than the town that hosts the world-
